Parade of Playhomes

 poplogo_compressed

The Parade of Playhomes Fundraiser for the

prevention of child abuse in our community.

Every five minutes in North Carolina, a child is abused. This is a staggering statistic, and we are proud to say that the HBADOC has been doing its part to help. For the past 20 years, we have been raising funds to support child abuse prevention programs in our area. Each year, three of our Member Builders have built a custom playhome that was raffled off and 100% of the proceeds donated to local organizations that help prevent child abuse. We are proud to say we have raised over $120,000 for this important cause.

The three organizations that we have donated the money to are:

Exchange Family Center of Durham, Chatham County Partnership for Children, & Hillsborough Exchange Center

Curious about how the money we raise from the Parade of Playhomes is used?

Here are a few success stories!

After trying multiple behavior programs, classes, and parenting books, Ms. R contacted the Family Support Program seeking help.  She desperately wanted assistance with managing her five year-old son’s behavior.  She was overwhelmed by having to pay constant attention to her son so he would not climb on the kitchen counters, break household items, or harm the family dogs.  He was also struggling in preschool and had been hitting teachers when he didn’t get his way.  Ms. R felt that her son’s behavior seemed to change daily with little warning.

After participating in the Family Support Program, Ms. R feels confident in her abilities to manage her son’s behavior while remaining calm and in control.  Now she is proud of her accomplishments as a parent, and truly enjoys the time she spends together with her son.

Since beginning Parenting of Adolescents (POA) counseling the relationship between a local teenager and her guardian has improved significantly.  The level of conflict has decreased significantly, their communication has improved, and the child is no longer acting out in school.  The family participated in 19 family therapy sessions over the course of 7 months.

Upon completion of counseling, both youth and mom stated they had enjoyed counseling and learned a lot from the experience.

Due to sudden outbursts from a child attending a local childcare center; a teacher is now using a warm, fuzzy jar to praise all the children in her classroom.  She has also implemented center tags and is working to improve the classroom transitions. The teacher has asked the Early Childhood Outreach program (EChO) to stay involved to help her continue to enhance her teaching.

A teacher of four year-olds was extremely critical of all the children in her care and never praised them for their actions.  She had very specific behavior expectations and high academic goals for the children.  It was clear that the teacher wanted the best for the children however the children could not feel this care.  The teacher was willing to try a warm, fuzzy jar to acknowledge the good things the children were dong.  The children’s behavior has improved and the teacher has noticed the change.

Every five minutes in North Carolina, a child is abused.  This is a staggering statistic, and we are proud to say that the HBADOC is doing its part to help.  For the past 17 years, we have been raising funds to support child abuse prevention programs in our area.

Proceeds from the 2010 Parade of Playhomes fundraiser will be distributed to The Exchange Family Center of Durham, The Exchange Family Center of Orange, and the Chatham County Partnership for Children.  The funds will be used to help educate parents on parenting techniques and will also allow one-on-one counseling with families in need of these services.
