Our green building program was launched in 2006 with the primary purpose of promoting building techniques and materials that produce homes which consume less energy and other resources, facilitate better indoor air quality, and provide a more durable product requiring less maintenance. In November of 2006, we established a 3rd-party-verified certification program that was initially based on the Model Green Home Building Guidelines issued by the National Association of Home Builders. In early 2010, our program adopted the National Green Building Standard (NGBS) as its basis for certification. The NGBS is a consensus-based industry standard that provides the requirements for four levels of certification: bronze, silver, gold, and emerald.
In order to achieve a certificate for a home, the builder has been required to enroll the home in the program, complete a scoresheet to show sufficient goals are being met in each of the program checklist areas, include those components during construction, and work with a third-party verifier who checks to ensure that adequate goals have been met.
In September of 2010, the GHBT program stopped taking new certification enrollments and have encouraged builders to use the NAHBGreen certification program, with which GHBT is affiliated. The NAHBGreen certification program is also based on the NGBS, so the basis for certification remains the same as under the GHBT certification program. The transition has been smooth and the GHBT program continues to promote green certified homes through our annual Green Home Tour and a variety of other educational and outreach events.
Builders who wish to start the certification process for a new project should work with a verifier to enroll in the NAHBGreen certification program. The verifiers who had been approved for GHBT projects can also help builders to certify under NAHBGreen. The GHBT verifiers are listed below. A full list of verifiers who can assist with NAHBGreen certification is provided on the NAHBGreen website.
